The Philosophy of Liberty

I have not been around for a while for various reasons, but I found some great material for you to think about. This will help answer if you are for “Freedom” or not.

The Philosophy of Liberty is based on the principle of self-ownership.  You own your life.  To deny this, is to imply that another person has a higher claim on your life than you do.  No other person, or groups of persons owns your life, nor do you own the lives of others  .

You exist in time: past, present, and future.  This is manifest in life, liberty, and the product of your life and liberty.  To lose your life is to your future.  To lose your liberty is to lose your present.  And to lose the product of your life and liberty is to lose that portion of your past that produced it.

The product of your life and liberty is your property.  Property is the fruit of your labor, the product of your time, energy, and talent.  Property is that part of Nature which you turn to valuable use.

Property is the property of others that is given to you by voluntary exchange and mutual consent.  Two people who exchange property are both better off or they wouldn’t do it.  Only they may rightfully make that decision for themselves.

At times, some people use force or fraud to take from others without volunatry consent.  The initiation of force of fraud: to take life is murder, to take liberty is slavery, and to take property is theft.

It is the same whether these actions are done by one person acting alone, by the many acting against the few, or even by finely dressed officials.

You have the right to protect your own life, liberty, and justly acquired property from the forceful aggression of others.    And you may ask others to help defend you.

But you do not have the right to initiate force against the life, liberty, and property of others.  Thus, you have no right to designate some person to initiate force against others on your behalf.

You have the right to seek leaders for yourself, but you have no right to impose rulers onto others.  No matter how leaders are elected, they are only human beings and they have no rights or claims that are higher than those of other human beings, regardless of the imaginative labels for their behavior, or the number of people encouraging them.

Officials have no right to murder, to enslave, to steal.  You cannot give them any rights you do not have yourself.

Since you own your life, you are responsible for your life.  You do not rent your life from others who demand obedience.  Nor are you a slave to others who demand your sacrifice.

Paul Craig Roberts: The Evil Empire

The US government is now so totally under the thumbs of organized interest groups that “our” government can no longer respond to the concerns of the American people who elect the president and the members of the House and Senate. Voters will vent their frustrations over their impotence on the president, which implies a future of one-term presidents. Soon our presidents will be as ineffective as Roman emperors in the final days of that empire.

Obama is already set on the course to a one-term presidency. He promised change, but has delivered none. His health care bill is held hostage by the private insurance companies seeking greater profits. The most likely outcome will be cuts in Medicare and Medicaid in order to help fund wars that enrich the military/security complex and the many companies created by privatizing services that the military once provided for itself at far lower costs. It would be interesting to know the percentage of the $700+ billion “defense” spending that goes to private companies. In American “capitalism,” an amazing amount of taxpayers’ earnings go to private firms via the government. Yet, Republicans scream about “socializing” health care.

Republicans and Democrats saw opportunities to create new sources of campaign contributions by privatizing as many military functions as possible. There are now a large number of private companies that have never made a dollar in the market, feeding instead at the public trough that drains taxpayers of dollars while loading Americans with debt service obligations.

Obama inherited an excellent opportunity to bring US soldiers home from the Bush regime’s illegal wars of aggression.  In its final days, the Bush regime realized that it could “win” in Iraq by putting the Sunni insurgents on the US military payroll.  Once Bush had 80,000 insurgents collecting US military pay, violence, although still high, dropped in half.  All Obama had to do was to declare victory and bring our boys home,
thanking Bush for winning the war.  It would have shut up the Republicans.

But this sensible course would have impaired the profits and share prices of those firms that comprise the military/security complex.  So instead of doing what Obama said he would do and what the voters elected him to do, Obama restarted the war in Afghanistan and launched a new one in Pakistan.  Soon Obama was echoing Bush and Cheney’s threats to attack Iran.

In place of health care for Americans, there will be more profits for private insurance companies.

In place of peace there will be more war.

Is it time for Civil Disobedience yet?

I’m sorry people, but we’re probably never going to be able to “educate” enough of the American population to vote out all of the bad guys and put in all of the good guys to get us back to Constitutional Government. That is pie in the sky, wishful thinking.

Now, while I love the idea of educating our fellow citizens, I believe that isn’t enough. It’s going to take some real brave action on our part. I’m not advocating violence, but instead peaceful resistance.

The problem is that we’re still thinking old school. We’re still playing by the establishment’s rules. We need to start playing by OUR rules and live like free individuals, to hell with the consequences.

There are enough hardcore Paulites/libertarians/Constutionalists/Anarchists to get our way. They cannot arrest all of us, and the more we disobey, the more people we’ll get to disobey with us.

We’ve got the greatest tool the freedom movement could every hope for; the internet. Let’s start utilizing it for real and get serious! I wish Michael would put this up on the front page. We, as a community, need to have a real solid discussion about Civil Disobedience, and how to execute it. I believe we can do it. I believe we must do it. And I believe the better coordinated we are, the more effective it will be.

You know in your heart it is going to get ugly. You know it’s not going to be easy. But when has fighting for freedom ever been easy?

The truth is that libertarians spend a huge number of brain-cycles on the concept of justice, and especially on all the ways they’ve been done wrong. These things should not occupy us as they do.

This is not to say that we don’t have reason to complain; after all, we’ve been born into a situation where one group of well-armed men tells everyone else, “Do what we say or we’ll hurt you.” Once you break through the brainwashing of your childhood and understand this, being pissed-off is entirely normal and entirely justifiable. It is not, however, something upon which to build a life, or even a philosophy.

Understand this: The things we complain about are legitimate and we should be mad, but they are surface issues; they are not the real deal. We need to see beyond injustice and our preoccupation with it. Being pissed-off is not nearly enough.

WE DEFEAT INJUSTICE, THEN WHAT?

Preventing injustice is not an end in itself – it is merely necessary to allow our work to proceed without molestation.

Does justice matter? For sure! But it is not the central issue – it is only necessary to keep destroyers away from our real work.

The purpose of law is to prevent successful coercion. It is necessary, even crucial, but it is not the end goal. Otherwise, once we kill injustice, we have nothing else; we are abandoned in a void.

Think of it this way: Let’s say that we were fully successful in getting rid of the state; then what? What do we do after the celebration party?

Play with this scenario for a minute:

It’s over. The state is gone. No big boss is telling you what to do any longer. There’s nothing to be angry about except some intermittent, garden variety crime. Now what do we do?

I hope you are not drawing a blank, but most of us do when presented with this scenario.

Here’s the big point I’m trying to make:

Whatever we would do after the celebration ends is what we should be doing now.
